Canoeing the Racquette River
in our gift of a Mad River Canoe

Thank you Don and Edith Eddy!

Sue and I were given this wonderful 16.5 foot Man River Canoe when Don found out through his daughter that we were looking to buy a canoe for ourselves.

Sue and I use to hike and bike a lot, but Sue's knees get in the way now, so we thought that canoeing would be a great way to get out in the wilderness together.

This trip up the Racquette from Axton Landing to the Falls was a fourth outing and our longest.  It was a perfect late summer day, and the canoe was exquisite on the river.

Above on the left is where we began, Axton Landing and on the right we parked next to the rangers boat at the Racquette Falls.
I don't know how many paddle miles it was, but it was a six hour day, with about 4½ hours of paddling.

We had the river to ourselves except for one other boat.  Autumn colors were just starting.
We had our lunch on this nice little beach on a bend in the river.

About ten minutes before rounding a bend and seeing the rough water you can hear it.  We parked and only walked a short way up the carry.

The river was low, we kept our eyes open for submerged logs and saw a great deal of wildlife and evidence of wildlife.
I took this photo of a buck swimming across the river right
in front of us.

On the way back we were with the flow of water.
There were numerous sandy beaches and wonderful old trees.  We really hope to get back here when the colors
are out in the forest.
