Pitfiring technique used by Terrance |

I coat the bottom of a garbage can with hardwood sawdust and place my bisque fired stoneware pots ontop. I fill each vessel with hardwood sawdust as well. The can has 8 drilled holes for air flow at the base. I spread copper and iron sulfates over and around the pots as well as salt. Then cover with a foot of soft wood kindling. |

On top of that I place hardwood kindling, cut no more than an inch in diameter, cover everything with newspaper and ignite. |

When I judge the fire to be at it's hottest I slightly cover the can, forcing the heat down but still allowing plenty of flame. A little further along in the process I cover the can more and allow the remaining contents to smolder for 12 hours. |
