AuSable Club Lands - west trail to the lower lake |
|
|
The AuSable Club is a private club that lets the public have access to some of the trails that run through their property |

The picture on the left is their main building, it is surrounded by a golf course, tennis courts and wonderful mountains. Numerous houses (camps) are scattered about the property. The west trail to the lower AuSable Lake begins with this foot bridge that goes across the AuSable River. |

I awoke this morning, June 22nd 2000, planning on doing a lengthy bike ride to the base of Hamlin and perhaps hiking part way up the mountain and working on my trail. But then the thought came to me that I ought to use this day differently. I ought to work on another of my book ideas. That is to create a book about some of the trails on the AuSable Club properties. I could do two different kinds, one that would be of a star design and have photographs. The other would have etchings and poems. They call it the west trail because it following the west side of the AuSable River. On this hike one is always hearing water running, splashing or cascading. The trails climbs it's way higher and higher till your above a gorge where the sound of the water rises and rumbles into you. The slope of Noonmark across the way has the scars of the fires of 1999. |

As I approached Wedge Brook, I left the trail and slid down an embankment that was very hard to get back up. While down there I took the picture on the left. A bridge crosses the brook and that's yours truly on the second bridge picture. I pretty much wear the same hiking clothes each time. After their cleaned of course.

Although it's in the 80's and very muggy back there, I wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt to keep the flies and mosquitoes off of me. I always bring a change of clothes too, because I can sweat five pounds off on a hike like this one. |
